In order to understand the many ways there are of being Autistic, we need to understand the impact of other identities such as being an ethnic minority, being female or assigned female at birth or being transgender. This is known as intersectionality – the intersection of different identities.

There are specific challenges faced by non-speaking Autistics, many of whom are denied access to a method of communication that works for them.
